Powerful cold-season winds brought walls down onto flimsy shelters sheltering Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. These deaths highlights the dangerous living conditions that continue after over 24 months of devastating airstrikes and severe lack of aid.

Truce Offers No Respite from Harsh Weather

Although a truce has been active since October, humanitarian organizations state that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate shelter required to withstand frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, reported on this week that the dead were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, three members of a one family — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 others were hurt in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started removing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and hygiene items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians live in improvised shelters since their houses were turned into rubble over the course of the war. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Figures Since the Truce

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, reports more than four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce began. The authority keeps detailed fatality data that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that no fewer than one hundred children under the age of 18 – 60 boys and forty girls – had been killed since the truce began because of armed actions, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected cases where enough information had been compiled to justify recording, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "So what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is badly required throughout the winter months. This marks the third winter since the war between the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed around twelve hundred individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
