What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
