The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
