The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
