Leeds Keep The Reds at Bay to Earn Valuable Point at Anfield
A pair of undefeated records continued intact at Anfield, but solely one team could derive genuine contentment from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men executed a textbook strategy of stifling and restricting the hosts, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the lingering limitations within the current champions' latest upturn.
Defensive Masterclass Secures Vital Point
A lacklustre scoreless stalemate, the first in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was primarily attributable to the immense solidity of the excellent centre-back pairing Struijk and Bijol, combined with the Anfield side's inability to unlock a compact Leeds defence. Liverpool were reduced to speculative opportunities, and a smattering of boos could be heard around the stadium at the full-time whistle on a sluggish performance.
"If I do not use the whole squad and we have a fixture list like this, I would not make changes," the manager stated. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his recent history was challenging. He is in incredible form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the mind needs to win over the emotion."
The Hosts' Frustration in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team initially displayed more energy and precision than in recent matches, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the right side. However, golden chances were scarce. The home side's best openings in the opening half involved striker Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the French international drifted infield and drew a stop from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The visitors' goalkeeper could not hold the shot, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz converting the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later sprinted through onto a ball over the top but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his appeals for a spot-kick were dismissed.
Spurned Chances Are Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he failed to find the target with his best chance. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong delivery in the six-yard box, the striker misdirected a header that struck the goalkeeper while facing an open goal.
At the other end, their most notable sight of goal came from an Alisson error. The experienced keeper played a wayward clearance directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time shot back towards goal was saved by the recovering Alisson.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest descended into a scrappy affair, devoid on incident. The midfielder, returning from a ban, forced a save from Perri from range. The subsequent rebound led to Ampadu handling the ball, giving Liverpool a set-piece in a dangerous position, which Wirtz wasted into the defence.
Slot made a triple substitution to bring impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to nodding his side in ahead from a set-piece, his effort flying just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his goal run for the visitors in the closing stages, but his tap-in was flagged out for a marginal offside call. Ultimately, the two sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
