Ken Burns reflecting on His Revolutionary War Project: ‘This Is Our Most Crucial Work’

The acclaimed documentarian is now considered more than a documentarian; he is a brand, an unparalleled production entity. When he has television endeavor arriving on the small screen, everyone seeks an interview.

The filmmaker completed “an astonishing number of podcasts”, he says, approaching the conclusion of nine-month promotional tour featuring numerous locations, numerous film showings and hundreds of interviews. “There seems to be a podcast for every citizen, and I believe I’ve appeared on most of them.”

Timeless Filmmaking Method

Brolin is joined by multiple distinguished artists, respected performing veterans, diverse creative professionals, household names and rising talent, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Tracy Letts, Damian Lewis, Laura Linney, Tobias Menzies, versatile character actors, television and film stars, plus additional notable names.

The filmmaker continues: “Honestly, this could represent the finest ensemble recruited for any project. They do an extraordinary service. Selection wasn’t based on fame. I got so angry when somebody said, ‘So why the celebrities?’. I responded, ‘These are performers.’ They represent global acting excellence and they vitalize these narratives.”

Multifaceted Story

However, the lack of surviving participants, photography and newsreels compelled the production to rely extensively on historical documents, weaving together individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. This methodology permitted to introduce audiences not only to the “bold-faced names” of that era along with multiple who are seminal to the story”, many of whom remain visually unknown.

Burns also indulged his individual interest for territorial understanding. “I have great affection for cartography,” he observes, “featuring increased geographical representation in this project compared to previous works throughout my entire career.”

Worldwide Consequences

The production crew recorded across multiple important places across North America plus English locations to preserve geographical atmosphere and worked extensively with living history participants. All these elements combine to depict events more brutal, complicated and internationally important versus conventional understanding.

The revolution, it contends, was no mere parochial quarrel over land, taxation and representation. Conversely, the project presents a violent confrontation that eventually involved numerous countries and surprisingly represented what it calls “humanity’s highest ideals”.

Early dissatisfaction and objections leveled at London by far-flung British subjects throughout multiple disputatious regions soon descended into a bloody domestic struggle, pitting family members against each other and creating local enmities. During the second installment, academic Alan Taylor comments: “The main misapprehension concerning independence struggle is that it was something a consolidating event for colonists. It leaves out the reality that it was a civil war among Americans.”

Nuanced Understanding

According to his perspective, the revolutionary narrative that “typically is drowning in sentimentality and wistful remembrance and is incredibly superficial and insufficiently honors the historical reality, every individual involved and the incredible violence of it.

It was, he contends, a movement that announced the revolutionary principle of inherent human rights; a bloody domestic struggle, separating rebels and supporters; and a global war, continuing previous patterns of struggles among European powers for the “prize of North America”.
