From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.

Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness.

“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.

Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release

But, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.

Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.

“This is quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Releases Response

Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained no new data.
