American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority indicated DFW, the second most active airfield in the US, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted several flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping movement at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
