Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in armed forces or intelligence positions.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to protect and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute orders that break the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message seemed to prompt a furious response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a combined statement condemning the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical social media posts and recant his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who love this country and took an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the ex-president deems it punishable by execution for us to restate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the ex-president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Political Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and determine all that."
White House Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
