Delhi Awakens to Toxic Pollution Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" category.
Extremely High Air Quality Levels
Multiple areas of the city recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the recommended level recommended by the global health authority.
In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable limits.

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly smog that blankets the city as winter sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city government appealed to the supreme court to request a easing of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be causing 10,000 untimely mortalities each year in the city.
