Cameroonian Opposition Figure Faces Court Action Regarding Election Unrest, Government Announces

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he incited "aggressive electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 demonstrators have been killed during clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators since the presidential election on October 12, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 winning an eighth term in office.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he won the election, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on demonstrators have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union urging caution.

Minister's Claims

Earlier this week, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he labeled "unauthorized" rallies causing the loss of lives, and also criticised him for claiming win in the electoral contest.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "accomplices responsible for an subversive plot" will also undergo judicial processes.

Poll Figures

The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the 12 October presidential election with over half of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had previously announced that he would not accept a fraudulent outcome - and that he was not afraid of being taken into custody.

Following the vote count, he said that security forces used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least two people.

Inquiry Revealed

On Tuesday, the government official revealed that an inquiry would be started into clashes prior to and following the announcement of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators died," he said, without giving a specific number of protesters who have been fatally injured in the confrontations.

The minister further mentioned that multiple personnel of the police and military also suffered significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

While the interior minister insisted the condition throughout Cameroon was now under control, demonstrators continue to protest in various areas of the nation, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators set up roadblocks on Tuesday, and ignited tires on the roads.

Experts caution that the political turmoil could push the country into a leadership vacuum.
