Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange lodging upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering near the casino, thinking I could pass the evening somewhere that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.

Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place because a female student noticed me loitering in the city and inquired if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she said I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my medical school interview was the following day. She even offered some food: a leftover sandwiches she had taken home her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location to rest to sleep.

With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up go to that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more folks like that woman.
